Whangamarino Fire by nickspicsnz

Whangamarino Fire

This fire is absolutely enormous and is sweeping across some very important wetlands. So many birds and other wildlife live here and it's nesting season. The frogs seemed to be chorusing together right across the wetland - I tried to get the sound on video because it sounded so plaintive. And all needless because apparently a newcomer was warned multiple times by locals not to set a fire on the edge of his property but he still went ahead. I was parked miles back when I took this and the fire was on the distant horizon. It was lighting up the clouds and the smoke has been drifting for miles and miles. They'd had 6 helicopters, a plane and fire fighters from about 8 towns there all day, and were due to start again at 6am. All they could do overnight, though, was watch and stop it affecting homes. Luckily there wasn't any wind which was slowing the fire's progress. I don't often wish for rain but today I do. If you have time, have a look at this on black - I think it really stands out.
Fabulous capture but really sad to see.

Such an impressive image and a scary situation

It looks even more dramatic in the dark. I hope they throw the book at the idiot who stated this.

Awesome capture. Just hope they can get it under control real soon.

So frustrating when it was entirely preventable!

Noooo. I always feel for the wildlife that lose their homes. Devastating.

a stunning capture but what a horrific thought and sight. Hope they can contain it soon.

Another hauntingly beautiful image, but so very sad

That’s so sad, to think of the needless suffering of animals because of human foolishness. Stunning shot that I wish hadn’t happened :)

Such a selfish thing to do, especially neat the peat. A brilliant image, but such a sad thing to see.

Oh my goodness. What a sight

@joansmor @ggshearron @corinnec @rickster549 @christinav @gardenfolk @ludwigsdiana @helenw2 @wh2021 @aikiuser @carolinesdreams @dide @wakelys @robz @casablanca Thanks for your lovely comment about my photo and for your concern. After a lot of hard work and many, many helicopter drops the fire service finally have the fire under control this evening. They'll have to monitor it for a few days to make sure there are no flare-ups but hopefully the worst is over. We've lost over 1,000 hectares of precious wetland so I hope it regenerates successfully over the coming months.

so sad, but an impressive shot.

How very sad! But a wonderful capture. Let's see a capture in the next few months for sure!

Such a great but sad capture. On the west coast of Canada we deal with forest fires and it seems worse when caused by irresponsible people.

It's a shame that such great image is caused by a destructive fire.

So very tragic

Why on Earth don’t people listen to wiser words. This is disastrous…all that wild life, peat gets so hot & burns underground. Brave firefighters…..praying it’s out soon & it pours down! A stunning photo Nick though.
