This fire is absolutely enormous and is sweeping across some very important wetlands. So many birds and other wildlife live here and it's nesting season. The frogs seemed to be chorusing together right across the wetland - I tried to get the sound on video because it sounded so plaintive. And all needless because apparently a newcomer was warned multiple times by locals not to set a fire on the edge of his property but he still went ahead. I was parked miles back when I took this and the fire was on the distant horizon. It was lighting up the clouds and the smoke has been drifting for miles and miles. They'd had 6 helicopters, a plane and fire fighters from about 8 towns there all day, and were due to start again at 6am. All they could do overnight, though, was watch and stop it affecting homes. Luckily there wasn't any wind which was slowing the fire's progress. I don't often wish for rain but today I do. If you have time, have a look at this on black - I think it really stands out.
Why on Earth don’t people listen to wiser words. This is disastrous…all that wild life, peat gets so hot & burns underground. Brave firefighters…..praying it’s out soon & it pours down! A stunning photo Nick though.
