A surprising aspect of the city was the amount of graffiti all over the city virtually on all surfaces. Per the guides, it is viewed as a form of self expression, represents mostly sports and political views, is not gang related, and is not discouraged or penalized by the government.
The respect for the ancient monuments is clear. No graffiti to be found on the monuments or the monument grounds. But everywhere else!
