The Eyes of City Hall by northy

The Eyes of City Hall

Windows in City Hall have been decorated with photographs of eyes... the eyes are apparently those of new Canadians and part of the idea is, that folks working at City Hall can think in terms of seeing the city thru the eyes of others... this installation is related to the Pan Am games (coming in 2015) and is called Fresh Eyes... personally, I find it kind of creepy... like I'm being watched... but... whatevah!

Apparently the "play me i'm yours" installation is kicking about somewhere... I need to find it :)

As an aside, it's killing me that the pillar on the right isn't straight... today was the third day in a row i took shots of this and i cannot for the life of me figure out how to manage the perspective to get a straight line on both sides...

As always, thank you all so much for the lovely comments on my photos from yesterday :)
Lovely soft b&w. What processing do you use? Pole adds to the perspective. Looks good!

I like the composition

@carolinedreams tx Caroline... i mostly use PSE presets for converting to b&w... this was the urban preset...

I think its the wide angle that does this. Mine does it and I've got to figure how to turn it off! I agree with you - kind of creepy - you don't get a rest from the eyes!

But doesn't the building have a curve to it? I guess that is why it does not appear straight, but it doesn't need to be. Not confusing to my eyes any way. I like the eye building, I think it looks cool!

Lovely image, nice work getting the Suit in motion, adds to the city feel

a bit spooky! cool shot, like the composition
July 12th, 2012
Wow - I almost didn't notice the eyes ... and how could I miss them?? Nice blur of Suit Man, too!

I quite like this and it works so well in b&w, I don't have PS so will have to sorth things like this out otherwise:(. The column doesn't bug me at all but if you rearrange the vertical line of it with the straightening tool you can sort it out like that?
July 12th, 2012
@frida tx Frida... unfortunately, if i straighten the column on the right, it throws off all the other lines... i've tried all sorts of straightening effects, not to mention changing the pov of the shot, but nope... oh well... onto the next thing :)

Gotta love art that kinda has interest and freaks you out at the same time. :)

Before I read your commentary my thought about the eyes was "that's creepy." The "Play Me I'm Yours" exhibit was in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago. I have pics on film, but haven't developed it yet.

Nice shot, kinda freaky having the eyes everywhere! I like your city dude in motion :)
July 12th, 2012
wow those eyes really are interesting to look at, and also the guy rushing along!
July 12th, 2012
Excellent compositon! I agree the eyes are a little creepy...kind of big brother is watching you! I like the movement in the guy rushing past.
July 12th, 2012
I like the eyes, very cool! Great composition. It almost seems to me that the guy doesn't like being watched, so he's hurrying along. 8)

Love the composition and B&W.
July 12th, 2012
Great shot...

I was in the city today taking photos, Out on the street, I thought of you. You are really up there amongst my favorite street photographers. Awesome movement!
July 12th, 2012
Beautifully composed! You are doing so well with these!
July 12th, 2012
Love the motion! Getting lines straight is the bane of my photographic life. ;)
July 12th, 2012
LOVE this shot
July 12th, 2012
Super cool shot -- love it! Don't know how to straighten your column but I didn't notice it until I read your comment. Love the shot!!!
July 12th, 2012
Very nice! Love the motion and your pov. Re: column, are you using PS? This is easily remedied using Select>All, then Edit>Transform>Skew. See http://365project.org/lesphoto/album-2/2012-07-04

Very cool composition and shot, I really like the motion!

I thought maybe there was an eye doctor located in the building.....hehe. They are kinda creepy, but make an interesting shot!
i asked questions one day about lines. I also was shooting columns and they bowed in at the top. I was told that it is because of using the wider angle part of your lens and is due the curvature of your lens. I was also told that you can fix this in PSE and now I see that Leslie has shown you how! Yea, I am writing her instructions down!! thanks @lesphoto .....i will use this too!
July 12th, 2012
Cool shot and a very interesting art installation. Yes, as @lesphoto mentioned, PS can fix your vertical lines issue. I run into this problem all the time, and normally I don't bother trying to make everything straight. My first choice is to level the horizontal lines, but if there aren't any of those, then I straighten the center-most vertical line - that works best for my eye, anyway.
July 12th, 2012
I like it as is, I guess you was standing up looking slightly down?
July 12th, 2012
I find the eyes creepy too! Great shot, and I'm going to be using this skew thing in the future too! Thanks @lesphoto.
July 12th, 2012
great scene - very strange having those massive eyes out there!!
July 12th, 2012
beautiful b&W. the motion makes this such a great shot!!!!
July 12th, 2012
@lesphoto oh COOL!!!! tx! i'll definitely note this down for next time...

@38mm tx Jase... i'm pretty sure i had it lined up on both sides correctly when i was shooting, and i was defiitely taking care not to tilt the camera... so no clue what happened... just a regular zoom lens... and focal length was 20mm so not pushing the limits of anything...

Another thing you might want to do is google "avoid converging lines in architecture". I think I read quite a bit of info on this lately (maybe in Digital Photography School newsletter?). Not sure it stuck, but it was interesting!

Love those eyes and specs! Curves and lines, lead-in lines on the ground... the guy walking into the frame...wonderful! Even the reflected specs echoing the cafe sign on the glass. Fab composition! Love it and a certain fav! It would be even better if he were wearing specs and there were less blur, while still hinting at movement! Your iso was 100 and aperture F10, so you have plenty of latitude there, but that's a very minor point
July 13th, 2012
Play me I'm yours - one piano is outside Commerce Court. :) i was at the farmers market on Wednesday and didn't even notice the eyes. I was running and didn't notice much!
July 13th, 2012
I agree with @myautofocuslife - that was exactly what I was thinking. You know, I thin you inadvertently just might have come up with the new super hero of the ages; 'City Slicker Man'... ;-p Honestly, all of your composition - the place, the POV, the eyes, the blurry guy in the suit, the lines - come together in a very nice picture. And the lines do work.
July 15th, 2012
wonder if you didn't mention eyes if i would have noticed? cool shot
July 16th, 2012
Great perspective. Love the swishy motion of that guy in shot xx
