Windows in City Hall have been decorated with photographs of eyes... the eyes are apparently those of new Canadians and part of the idea is, that folks working at City Hall can think in terms of seeing the city thru the eyes of others... this installation is related to the Pan Am games (coming in 2015) and is called Fresh Eyes... personally, I find it kind of creepy... like I'm being watched... but... whatevah!
Apparently the "play me i'm yours" installation is kicking about somewhere... I need to find it :)
As an aside, it's killing me that the pillar on the right isn't straight... today was the third day in a row i took shots of this and i cannot for the life of me figure out how to manage the perspective to get a straight line on both sides...
As always, thank you all so much for the lovely comments on my photos from yesterday :)
I think its the wide angle that does this. Mine does it and I've got to figure how to turn it off! I agree with you - kind of creepy - you don't get a rest from the eyes!
But doesn't the building have a curve to it? I guess that is why it does not appear straight, but it doesn't need to be. Not confusing to my eyes any way. I like the eye building, I think it looks cool!
I quite like this and it works so well in b&w, I don't have PS so will have to sorth things like this out otherwise:(. The column doesn't bug me at all but if you rearrange the vertical line of it with the straightening tool you can sort it out like that?
@frida tx Frida... unfortunately, if i straighten the column on the right, it throws off all the other lines... i've tried all sorts of straightening effects, not to mention changing the pov of the shot, but nope... oh well... onto the next thing :)
Before I read your commentary my thought about the eyes was "that's creepy." The "Play Me I'm Yours" exhibit was in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago. I have pics on film, but haven't developed it yet.
I was in the city today taking photos, Out on the street, I thought of you. You are really up there amongst my favorite street photographers. Awesome movement!
I thought maybe there was an eye doctor located in the building.....hehe. They are kinda creepy, but make an interesting shot!
i asked questions one day about lines. I also was shooting columns and they bowed in at the top. I was told that it is because of using the wider angle part of your lens and is due the curvature of your lens. I was also told that you can fix this in PSE and now I see that Leslie has shown you how! Yea, I am writing her instructions down!! thanks @lesphoto .....i will use this too!
Cool shot and a very interesting art installation. Yes, as @lesphoto mentioned, PS can fix your vertical lines issue. I run into this problem all the time, and normally I don't bother trying to make everything straight. My first choice is to level the horizontal lines, but if there aren't any of those, then I straighten the center-most vertical line - that works best for my eye, anyway.
@lesphoto oh COOL!!!! tx! i'll definitely note this down for next time...
@38mm tx Jase... i'm pretty sure i had it lined up on both sides correctly when i was shooting, and i was defiitely taking care not to tilt the camera... so no clue what happened... just a regular zoom lens... and focal length was 20mm so not pushing the limits of anything...
Another thing you might want to do is google "avoid converging lines in architecture". I think I read quite a bit of info on this lately (maybe in Digital Photography School newsletter?). Not sure it stuck, but it was interesting!
Love those eyes and specs! Curves and lines, lead-in lines on the ground... the guy walking into the frame...wonderful! Even the reflected specs echoing the cafe sign on the glass. Fab composition! Love it and a certain fav! It would be even better if he were wearing specs and there were less blur, while still hinting at movement! Your iso was 100 and aperture F10, so you have plenty of latitude there, but that's a very minor point
Play me I'm yours - one piano is outside Commerce Court. :) i was at the farmers market on Wednesday and didn't even notice the eyes. I was running and didn't notice much!
I agree with @myautofocuslife - that was exactly what I was thinking. You know, I thin you inadvertently just might have come up with the new super hero of the ages; 'City Slicker Man'... ;-p Honestly, all of your composition - the place, the POV, the eyes, the blurry guy in the suit, the lines - come together in a very nice picture. And the lines do work.
