Appalachian Melody (My favorite autumn song)
Words and music by Mark Heard
Applachian melody drifting softly down,
Instruments of gold and red and brown.
Do not need no dulcimer,
Or banjo, fiddle sounds.
For right now, I'll watch these leaves come down.
How peculiar liking old, dead leaves against the sky,
There is something more that meets the eye.
Funny how I sit and watch these leaves come down from high.
But these things are music to my eyes.
Such a pretty song I sing,
Have I been beguiled?
This day is not imagination's child.
Every time the leaves come down,
I just have to smile.
For they sing a melody so mild.
How peculiar liking old dead leaves against the sky.
There is something more that meets the eye.
Funny how I sit and watch these leaves come down from high.
But these things are music to my eyes.
Happy first day of Autumn to all my northern hemisphere friends!
I just love the look, feel, and smell of Fall. You captured this beautifully . . great color and pof. Coming from your Minnesota friend, I am very familiar with this scene! Not looking forward to Winter tho. LOL
I did not know Mark Heard and so I tracked him down and listened to a sweet version of this song on YouTube whilelooking at your photo and reading the lyrics. What a lovely combination. Thank you for the experience.
@karenann Thanks Karenann! I do like the changing colors- although as the weather alternates between warmer and cooler sometimes it's tough on the arthritis. Are you any where near St. Paul? We used to have friends that lived there. @cimes1 Thank you Carole! I appreciate all your lovely comments on my pictures. You sure know how to make a person feel good!! @kerristephens Thanks Kerri- it's actually rainy today, but I like how the overcast light actually brings out the colors.
@allie912 Why thank you Allison! Yes, it's such a beautiful song. Sadly, Mark Heard died quite young. I think it was cancer, but I'm not sure. He produced 3 or 4 albums and then went home to be with Jesus. It rocked the Christian community because he was young and left a wife and 2 (?) children. This was always my favorite piece of his along with another song called Castaway (which was on a different album). Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And thanks!
No, Ann. We live in a small town just southwest of St. Paul . .about 100 miles from there. I'm a "small-town" girl. Love to visit large cities and then I like to come back home!
@supergrannie Thank you Shirley- yes, they will start turning as soon as the temperatures go to the 50's at night and then come on strong after the first frost. We usually peak here toward the beginning of October, but with all the rain we had this summer, it will probably be the second week.
@alia_801 Thanks Alia- I'm not sure what caused that. It's the first year I've seen the leaves so spotted. I'm sure it has something to do with all the rain we've been having. @mrssmith Thanks Carla. I shot several pictures outside yesterday, but this was my favorite because of the way the leaves were framing the shot.
Ann what I'm trying to say is fall is not always perfect beauty but decay too and there's beauty in that transition and you captured that here with these leaves.
@michaelelliott Thank you Michael- yes, I know what you're saying. This is something I've thought about a lot this fall. I appreciate your sensitivity! Thank you for the view and the comment! @changingtides Thank you Allie- it's a favorite song- glad you liked it!
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! I appreciate all your lovely comments on my pictures. You sure know how to make a person feel good!!
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri- it's actually rainy today, but I like how the overcast light actually brings out the colors.
@pampowell Thank you Pam. (o:
@bkbinthecity I hope to take another hike along the Delaware- when the rain stops and the waters subside!
@sarasdadandmom Thank you Terry!
