I was reading in Patterson's book today on the topic of Light and Perspective. I'm enjoying the way Patterson explains the effects light has on the components of a picture. Some of these points are things that I have noticed on my own, but others are aspects that I have been unaware although I've seen them at work. Such was the case with warm and cool colors. Patterson stated, "In daylight, warm colors come forward and cool colors will appear to recede." I wanted to really see that for myself, so I grabbed two votive candles and set them in the sunlight. I made sure they were next to each other and then took this shot. I don't know if you see it, but the blue one looks as if it is slightly behind the red one. In my mind, I know they are in line with one another, yet the colors do exactly what Patterson had predicted.
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri! @eudora Thanks Diane! I'm glad you see it because I was really afraid it was in my imagination because I read that was what it was supposed to do!
@olivetreeann yes, I understand that the effect is related to the colors, but it would be interesting to repeat the experiment with similarly shaped objects and with equal distance to the light.
@nadaa Thank you Nada. I wasn't really thinking much about the composition per se but it did work in my favor to have this nice streak of sunlight falling on the glass pieces.
i really like the way you set this up, ann. and it's an interesting theory that mr. patterson put forth in the book. however, i wonder if it would have the same effect if the blue is placed on the left and took in more of the light. i couldn't find coloured votives as i wanted to do this, too, when i read it. joh well done, my friend.
@summerfield Thanks Vikki! I think it worked either way, but I deleted a lot of my extra 365 project shots from my camera card to make room for grandkid shots so I can't show you! Sorry!
@eudora Thanks Diane! I'm glad you see it because I was really afraid it was in my imagination because I read that was what it was supposed to do!
Thank you Maggie, Cindy, Timothy, Taffy, Brian, Bev, Nicole, Yao, Alia, Rick, Carole, Laura and Henri! Glad you all enjoyed my little experiment!
