Photography Book Club 24

I was reading in Patterson's book today on the topic of Light and Perspective. I'm enjoying the way Patterson explains the effects light has on the components of a picture. Some of these points are things that I have noticed on my own, but others are aspects that I have been unaware although I've seen them at work. Such was the case with warm and cool colors. Patterson stated, "In daylight, warm colors come forward and cool colors will appear to recede." I wanted to really see that for myself, so I grabbed two votive candles and set them in the sunlight. I made sure they were next to each other and then took this shot. I don't know if you see it, but the blue one looks as if it is slightly behind the red one. In my mind, I know they are in line with one another, yet the colors do exactly what Patterson had predicted.
Cool shot

This is so cool! You're ahead of me in the book, but the blue votive definitely recedes.

@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
@eudora Thanks Diane! I'm glad you see it because I was really afraid it was in my imagination because I read that was what it was supposed to do!

Very good example and result! Something to ponder!

very cool

Great demonstration of the effect of lighting -- cleverly done, and I learned from seeing the optical illusion you created.

nice one

Nice shot. Great colors and textures. well done
August 25th, 2013
what an awesome experiment! and your right, it does look like the blue is behind the white!
August 25th, 2013
Yes, I can see, the cold color is behind. so interesting.
August 25th, 2013
Ooh how interesting! The blue one definitely looks further back to me... :)
August 25th, 2013
It is interesting details like this that the average person doesn't even think about.

Great composition

Really interesting and I like the colored shadows, too.

Looks great.

Nice comparison shot. I had not read that. Very interesting indeed. The blue definitely looks further away.

Very interesting experiment and fascinating. I wonder if the effect would be the same if both votive would be the same shape...
August 25th, 2013
@anazad511 Thank you Ana! Yes, it would be the same because it has to do with the colors, not the shapes. It's really an interesting effect!
August 25th, 2013
@olivetreeann yes, I understand that the effect is related to the colors, but it would be interesting to repeat the experiment with similarly shaped objects and with equal distance to the light.
August 25th, 2013
Cool! I think the extra brightness brings the red forward too.
August 25th, 2013
@archaeofrog Thanks Katie- that's all sunlight. I purposely did not do any editing on this just to see if it really did work.
August 26th, 2013
I did not know that! I stalled on my book reading. One day.....
August 27th, 2013
@espyetta Thanks Marybeth! I wouldn't worry about that too much- you've got school to teach!
August 27th, 2013
Great experiment.
August 27th, 2013
@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole! Had to test it out for myself!
August 27th, 2013
Nice shot of a cool experiment. This really works!
August 28th, 2013
@daisy Thank you Kathryn! There are some things I read in the book and I just have to see it for myself!
August 28th, 2013
Such an interesting composition of light, shadow, and color.
August 28th, 2013
@nadaa Thank you Nada. I wasn't really thinking much about the composition per se but it did work in my favor to have this nice streak of sunlight falling on the glass pieces.
August 28th, 2013
i really like the way you set this up, ann. and it's an interesting theory that mr. patterson put forth in the book. however, i wonder if it would have the same effect if the blue is placed on the left and took in more of the light. i couldn't find coloured votives as i wanted to do this, too, when i read it. joh well done, my friend.

@summerfield Thanks Vikki! I think it worked either way, but I deleted a lot of my extra 365 project shots from my camera card to make room for grandkid shots so I can't show you! Sorry!
