I received a wonderful gift when I met up with Vikki at Niagara Falls. She leant me her Canon EOS Rebel T3i so that I could try it out and see if it's the next camera for me. WOW!!!!!!! I decided that August will be my learning month. I downloaded the manual and planned to work through it a little each day. But I'm off to a bumpy start. With food shopping to do, company coming for dessert tonight, a funeral tomorrow, and our niece arriving for a visit, there will be no time to read the manual! Not, to worry- I'll put the macro lens on (without reading the manual? haha) and set the camera on automatic (which I swore I was NOT going to do) and then take some garden shots. I did manage to successfully remove the lens from the camera but then could not figure out how the macro lens went on (keep in mind I am not reading the manual- not the best idea!). In the end I realized it would be better to put the other lens back on, etc. However, I couldn't figure out how the threads lined up (please note I am not wearing my glasses which should indicate why I could not figure this out). After putting my glasses on and carefully studying the design, I successfully reattached the first lens and set out to shoot some pictures in the garden. Sometimes, it's just better to laugh at yourself and readjust your goals. The manual can wait until Monday- when life quiets down. Until then, I'll just experiment and shoot in automatic! (Oh, and not change lenses.)
heck! how bad a friend am i?? i figure after the fact that i should at least have shown you how to remove the lenses and let you know, too, that the wide angle/macro lens attaches to the lens and not the camera! it's the rain, let's blame it on that. ;-) and not on the fact that we chatted more than we took pictures! we should've had more time. then again i thought you would be reading the manual first. hehehe! or emailed me. :-P ah, you'll do fine. did you get a shot of the waterfalls?
Thank you one and all! I am very excited and although I haven't started the manual yet, I am experimenting and will get to the actual reading on Monday. I'm not sure if this is the equivalent to the Canon D series but they might be very similar.
@summerfield It was late and I couldn't remember your tag so I took a guess, but somehow you saw it anyway! Yes, I did think of emailing you but my brain thought, "It doesn't look all that different from my 35mm so I'm sure I can do this." The real problem was I was not wearing my glasses!
Yes, I did shoot the waterfall. It's in the second album on July 26th.
I haven't been able to read the manual due to friends coming to dinner, a funeral and a few other things- but Monday I'll be back on track and start reading. I printed out the August words and thought maybe I'd use them as the "assignment" for the day. We'll see.
It was much more fun talking than walking in the rain (o: and I really loved getting to know you better. Next time, weather permitting, we'll take more pictures and plan for a longer day.
And if I run into any more questions, I'll ask!
What a great shot, Ann and a funny tale. You really should wear your glasses! LOL ... I'm glad that you figured out how it went back together! Have fun with the camera. I can't wait to see some amazing shots.
You look very deep in thought, Ann. What a great gift! I still have hardly looked at the manual from the camera I got for Christmas in 2012. There is so much to learn but just never seem to have the extra time.
@prttblues Thanks Bev! Yes, I put them on which resulted in me re-attaching the lens. But today I tried reading the manual and really got myself turned around in the settings. Tomorrow tutorials on YouTube.
@alia_801 Thanks Alia! Life will be quiet again tomorrow when Jeff goes off to work! @cimes1 Thanks Carole- it's more like worry! @altadc Thank you Alta! I was totally amazed and never expected this in a million years. Since it is such a great gift it is motivation to keep trying to understand the camera, but today I would have easily given up if I owned it myself.
So nice to see such a lovely recent shot of you in your natural element--365ing! :) What a wonderful experiment to practice with a new, loaned camera. There's no one more deserving of such an opportunity, that's for sure. :) At one time I found an article on here about the top 10 lenses, but at this point I think I've heard the most about macro, zoom, lens baby, and well I forgot the rest. Did your camera come with a lens kit? Good luck!
and you tagged me wrong! :-)

Oh my- thank you for the fav Vesna!
