A Sliver of a Silvery Moon by olivetreeann

A Sliver of a Silvery Moon

I was trying to capture a shot of the birds today for the camera settings challenge on shutter speed but the birds were totally uncooperative! They were virtually nowhere to be seen and I thought I'd have to dig in the archives yet again. But when I went out to bring the bird feeder in (so that the deer won't eat it all during the night) I saw the moon in the sky and decided to grab another moon shot. It was really interesting tonight in that you could see the crescent lit up by the sun's reflection and you could also see the shadowed side. I'm not happy with the outcome here. I probably had something set wrong but for some reason the camera did not want to focus on the moon- at least not as crisp and clear as some of my other shots have been. You can just barely see the details on this- however in reality you could see so much more. It was a really unique view. I guess this just one of those off days I'll chalk up to life in general. Tomorrow is another day!
Great shot

Super capture

Great pic of the crescent! Perhaps the exposure was too long? I know it's always a lot shorter than I expect when I try Moon pics.

Thank you for capturing this. It is exactly as I saw it last night on my drive home. But I was tired and it was very cold so I didn't drag my camera and tripod out when I got home.

What a co-incidence, a friend I follow @nicoleterheide posted a picture almost identical to this one. Beautiful capture.

i saw it and decided at the spur of the moment (i was tired and hungry) that it was a gorgeous view with the city skyline all lit up and the crescent moon accenting the clear skies. i hope it's the same tonight, because i intend to take a closer capture. yes, you can see the orb quite clearly and it was really fascinating to watch. froze my buns off but i got a nice shot at least.

by the way, who's initiating the "splash of red black and white" february?

by the way, i looked at your exit. 1 sec is too long. i always use my canon powershot to do a close up of the moon and i always set it at 1/125 exposure and the lowest ISO. when all else fails, always check the exif of your last successful shot. tonight may not be as freezing but there might be clouds but i'll see if the old point and shoot could still do the job. take care, ann.

@sangwann Thank you Dione! Yes- I follow Nicole too and left a note on her shot saying I'd captured the same thing- only hers was better!
@radiogirl Thank you Kathy!
@digitalrn Thank you Rick!
@cimes1 Thank you Carole and thank you for the fav!!
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@summerfield Thank you Vikki! Still a lot to learn. Might try again tonight- weather permitting. Flash of Red will be posted tomorrow. I spent about 45 minutes today putting together a lovely explanation complete with links only to watch it disappear into cyber space when I clicked on "start topic". This week has been like that- one kooky mishap after another. I'll live!
@gerry Thank you Gerry and thank you for the fav!!
@rubicon Thanks Lynn and thank you for the fav!!

@olivetreeann - ann, i learned the hard way, too. now i type my blurb in an email then do copy and paste. a few sundays ago, it happened to me while making up the toy bulletin when we were away. it's a good mood buster, i must say. thanks, will be on the watch for it.

I had the same problem with my camera being not able to focus on the moon, probably not enough light or something. So I put my camera on manual focus en put in on infite focus, that is the last stripe before the lying 8. I read on a photosite that that was the way to go with moon/star shots.

I like your philosophy, great shot

@nicoleterheide Thanks for that tip Nicole- I will have to write that down and see if I can figure it out someday! LOL I am a great dabbler, but I have a low capacity for numbers! hehe

@ceilidh Thank you Margaret! Yes, it saves me from a lot of soul-searching- teehe!

Nice shot, Ann. I love it when you capture not just the lighted (I don't know if that's the correct way to say it or not) portion of the moon but you also capture the dark side and it definitely shows. Getting detail in the sliver of the moon is not an easy task. It takes a lot of patience and a lot of shots just to get one decent one. So even though you're unhappy with this shot, I like it so you can't be unhappy anymore... so there. :p
