What I Did On My Summer Vacation

OR Why I was Away from 365 Longer Than I Expected!

We had a great visit with our son and his family in Kentucky. We played on their new swing set, jumped on the trampoline (well, Gampy did that, not Grammy) and celebrated Micah's upcoming 5th birthday a few days early. Fun!! And it ended all too soon. But we'll be back for the opening games of Christopher's soccer season so that's OK. We were in Maryland and about half way home and I was driving when all of a sudden I felt a stabbing pain in my lower back. When it only seemed to get worse, I pulled over and Jeff started driving again. But the pain did not subside and within 5 minutes it became excruciating. We took the next exit off the highway and ended up calling an ambulance- my first ever ride in one. Once in the ER I was tentatively diagnosed with kidney stones and a CAT-scan proved this to be true. The pain only got worse while the doctor was dealing with several stroke patients and a few assorted accident victims. At one point the automatic blood pressure band turned my arm purple and the pain was so bad it felt like my entire arm was about to explode. I couldn't stop shaking it hurt so much. Jeff called in the nurse, it was adjusted and then the nurse took one look at me and immediately got the doctor. When the pain medication finally settled in it was a God-send (although I usually try to do things the natural way, this was one of those times where it was a necessity!). I was released with follow-up instructions and prescriptions but I was totally wiped out. If you've had kidney stones, you know what I experienced; if you haven't had them, count your blessings!!! I had one day to somewhat re-cooperate before our other 3 grandchildren arrived for an over-night visit, but I was glad they came. It took two more days to get back in the swing of things after they left, but today I'm starting to feel more like myself. So that's where I've been and hopefully, I'll never go there again!
So sorry to read your news Ann, I hope you are feeling much better now.

That's awful to know about - amazing that it starts so suddenly - perhaps they get stuck - the stones! Gall stones are also painful but I think you have to have an operation for those!

Oh gosh! What an awful experience! Hope you are on the mend and feeling better soon.
June 25th, 2018

June 25th, 2018
Oh no, how awful for you. A friend of mine had kidney stones a few years ago and she said it was a hundred times worse than childbirth. Hope you have now been able to pass the stones.
June 25th, 2018
Ooh poor you, worse than child birth I'm told. Welcome back to 365
June 25th, 2018

June 25th, 2018
A very scary experience to come on so quickly and I hope you are soon feeling much better and back to your normal self.
June 25th, 2018
Oh dear, I'm so sorry. As one who has suffered you have my complete sympathy. I was at home, they said 'don't drive we'll send a doctor'... well if they had told me it was going to be 3 hours waiting by myself crawling with pain I would have phoned a neighbour..... So scary. Take care, drink lots of cranberry juice and water, of course x
June 25th, 2018
Ouch, you poor love! Kidney stones are considered to be the worst pain known to Man! I sincerely hope you have managed to pass them out of your system and are feeling much much better soon. All the best
June 25th, 2018
Oh thats no good do hope you are well over this now .
June 25th, 2018
Oh you poor thing! I haven’t had them myself, but I’ve looked after people with them & they are excruciating! I hope you are feeling better now.
June 25th, 2018
So sorry for you. Hope you can stand it and recovery is on you way.
June 25th, 2018
Ouch! I have NOT had the pleasure of kidney stones and it sounds excruciating!!! I hope you are back to normal again! I have had a perforated ulcer where I almost passed out while driving myself to the ER. It healed. I have had gallbladder attacks for several years where I put up with that terrible pain until a gallstone clogged a dual duct and I got pancreatitis, jaundice and temporary hepatitis. The gallbladder went bye bye. I think I will stop my wars stories here but there are more. :)
June 25th, 2018
What an ordeal you had! And so much pain. I have been very fortunate but have seen a lot and it is not good. I am glad that you are OK now and pretty much recovered.

Thank you so much for all your loving thoughts and well-wishes. They mean the world to me (figuratively and literally!!).

Yes, they are worse than gall stones (had them a long time ago!)
Yes, they are worse than childbirth (my second son tried to come out sideways first- so I know what that feels like too- ouch!)

@bruni Yes they did

I'm finally feeling back to my self again but seems like there's a mountain of things to catch up on.

Thanks again and again for all your kindness!!!

Ditto to all the thanks I said above- you're so supportive and it really touches my heart!

@filsie65 I have not heard about cranberry juice- I'll look into that!

@gardenfolk Sounds like you've earned a badge of honor from all that!

@kwind Yes, it is, but I think your son has probably dealt with something very similar as far as pain goes.
June 26th, 2018

You poor thing! My husband had a kidney stone just before we were to go on vacation, many years ago. He was so wiped out, we had to cancel, our trip to Florida. Did you pass the stone? When Imsaw the size of John’s stone, I couldn’t believe something that small could make so much trouble. Fortunately, he never had another one. I hope you are so lucky.
