I took a different route home from my walk today and came upon a tree covered in what I thought were spider webs but when I took a closer look it was full of these clusters of caterpillars.
There were clusters like this on nearly every other leaf, there must have been thousands in this one tree.
They are spindle ermine moth caterpillars and the webs are laid by many moths in the same tree presumably for safety in numbers.

Fabulous capture and what a treat to hear Burl Ives again. Haven’t heard that one forever. It used to be a regular in Children’s Favourites once upon a time
