The churches of Iceland are consistently built on the tops of hills, assuring that any volcanic destruction that befalls the island will merely kill every citizen on the island, leaving the church unharmed for future settlers.

When I visited Russia I met someone who claimed churches were always built on these magnetic lines
Interesting to read about churches being located in high places. In rural France churches have been built on the highest spot. Whilst we've never heard it discussed or seen any documentation to the contrary, our best guess is that if the church is on the high ground, it will be more visible and its bells/music/announcements will be more audible. It's also worth remembering that churches were used as sanctuaries in times of low land flooding etc. Convents and monasteries also provided food, shelter and solace for travellers...and many continue to do so. @trinda
