After a very happy few days celebrating our daughter's marriage, I'm back up north in Yorkshire!
A few days ago I posted a shot of Rochdale Canal Lock No 1. If I had turned 180° from that shot, you would see this, Sowerby Bridge Wharf. So this is where the Rochdale Canal meets the Calder & Hebble Navigation. The Wharf was once a busy transhipment point. The locks on the Rochdale Canal were 74' length, which meant the large "Mersey Flat" boats could use the canal up from Manchester. The maximum boat length on the Calder & Hebble is 60', so cargo had to be transhipped onto shorter craft to continue the journey into Yorkshire.
After the demise of the canals over the post-war years, these attractive wharf buildings were left to decay. A regeneration project partly led and funded by The Prince's Trust brought them back to life as a new office and leisure centre for the 20th century.
This shot is SOOP, so forgive the technical issues!
Love old Wharf buildings, glad they were restored.
We have a lot of wharf buildings in the Netherlands being restored as well, a lot of them are trendy bars & restaurants now 😊
