I hate having to do this, but after reading a news brief from the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources, I'm taking down the bird feeders and bird bath for 2-3 weeks. Apparently cases of salmonellosis are being seen in several varieties of birds in NC and SC, causing alarming numbers of bird deaths. The DNR recommends taking all feeders down so that birds disperse from common gathering areas for a few weeks. Although I'm militant about cleaning and disinfecting feeders and water containers, I don't want to chance any contamination spread and unwittingly help create an avian pandemic. Darn it...just when I was getting interested in birds.
Three Good Things:
1. Actually reading the NCDNR newsletter
2. The ridiculous stockpile of sunflower seed and dried mealworms I have on hand can safely be stored for a while
3. A big to do list of outside projects on a gorgeous day
@judithg It's recommended that any shared feeding/watering stations/implements be removed. I'm thinking the stream running through the park will be a popular drinking spot for feathered friends. They can safely distance there. ☺
Great shot of your feathered friends! What is the bird on the right? We don't have those up here. I would miss my little friends. And a good reminder to give everything a good scrub.
