The mystery tree in our back garden in another of its stages; we brought this with us from our last house, stuck it in the ground and gave it two choices (live or die); we have not a clue what it is, but don't care, it's gorgeous in all its stages
I'm with @quietpurplehaze on this one - I think it is a type of Magnolia - Magnolia salicifolia. Seems to fit the description in my RHS book. Give it a google and check it out. :-)
The description here ( https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/10709/Magnolia-salicifolia/Details) sums it up perfectly (even the 'conical fruit' it displays later in the year) - it's a Willow Leaved Magnolia. Brilliant, thank you both so much (I reckon we'll still call it 'the mystery tree')
I am really not sure but wonder if it is a star magnolia?! Beautiful shot!

I like a mystery solved, especially one with anise or lemon scented flowers as per your link Phil. Well done @Cherrill!
I think you solved it Jackie!!!
