This is a quarter of my preparation for the digital photography workshop session this afternoon. We were asked to take 4 shots, each one using different parameters. This shot of the local church is for setting the f-stop together with the ISO. Constructive criticisms on my settings welcome as everything is rather (read 'very') experimental still.
And I just realised I can use this for 'door' later in the month.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
For me the settings are just fine - and the red door makes the picture. Might go back and re shoot from underneath the lamp so it doesn't distract from the shape of the porch?
Fiona, thanks for taking the time to comment - it seems to me it's easy to get nice comments on 365 but not so easy to get useful constructive criticism. I'll try your suggestion and see what I get, will lose the hedges then of course, oh and the trees I suppose. This is a very photogenic church!
I like the pop of red bringing the attention to the door & church- I like the inclusion of hedge and trees but I agree the hanging lamp has a slight distraction --perhaps the photo taken at a slightly off centre angle !
Very nice image, Hazel. I thought as Fiona, then thought as your reply to her. You would lose more church behind the hedges, as you say, which would be a pity. Very tentative suggestion: I would probably turn the camera portrait format, crouch down and get all that door and archway over - (including the cross) - it is a beautiful architectural feature in itself - within the lamp and its support. I would fill the frame with that. I would do the whole of the church, probably from in the churchyard - another time for another part of your course. Just an idea!
Settings look fine. Like many of my own shots, it's got the problem of the flat, colourless British sky. Imagine how it would have looked with some shape and colour in the sky, but short of loads of tedious post-production work, there's little you can do about that. Would have been tempted to crop tighter, place the church further to the right and use the footpath as a leading line to draw the eye into the pic
More as the technical possibilities I`m interested in the composition of the photo. Two feet to the left , one feet lower , a bit more near, how much of the trees and so on. I`m always take/need much time to draw the button. And a lot of tries/captures. and at home I often need Picasa to finish it. You did not bad with this capture/pic.
Placing the church further to the right by cropping would also get rid of some unspecified shape behind the hedge far right - can't work out quite what it is - but I was concerned about losing the balance of the trees. I'm not into much post-production work but will go down again (only a few minutes' walk from me)on a sunny, cloudy day and see what I can get. Very many thanks for feedback.
nice image its so hard at this time of the year especially with the uk skies. I usually expose on the sky, that makes the rest of the image to dark, but its easier to recover lost shadow detail than lost detail in the highlights.
The red door pops out of the photo with lovely POV, I think I agree with Fiona, you might try a shot under the lamp or line the lamp up so it doesn't detract from the shape of the arch of the door??
Ivan, thanks so much for your feedback. I might walk down to the church tomorrow and try what you suggest. Whilst taking this shot I met the vicar and his alsatian setting off for their second walk of the day (Jinks hates that alsatian, which has never done anything to him, with a passion and barks hysterically at it whenever we meet!) and the vicar told me that the church is open during the day and to take pics of the stained glass windows if I like so I might do that too.
I love the line to the door and love that is is red and really pops. But if I were to give any advice, I would say that maybe a different angle to keep the door AND the lamp by the hedge...maybe get a bit lower so that the lamp is centered over the door more...but that might mess up the great line of the walkway up to the door. as for the bright grey sky..well, that is a problem we have here in Oregon too...grey skies...I try to keep it out as much as possible. Maybe a crop? and I am with you...the only way to get constructive advice on 365 is to ask...everyone is so nice and do not want to offend.
Love that red door. Great subject for homework I would think.
Thanks for asking for feedback coz it gave me the opportunity to go back and see what others were suggesting. Lots of relevant contributions which I will have to store away and think about for future.
Well you are streaks ahead of me now technically Hazel so I can't comment or add to the excellent suggestions you have been given - just to say well done for your progress and I like the shot!

Maybe some dodging and burning of the hedge to bring out a little more detail and contrast.
Yes. the door makes the photo. Congrats.
Wot? and double wot?!!
And yes, perhaps, the lamp gives a certain 'Je ne sais quoi'?

Thank you, Ferry - I think you are saying a bit the same as Pete @pistonbroke above - I'm really glad I asked for feedback.

Wot?
I don't think I am ahead, Patricia (confused might be the more appropriate description!) but thank you for your comments.
