revised homework

I thought of using my 3rd album today to do a bit of a crop on my image using suggestions you kindly made. @pyrrhula @pistonbroke @ivan I think the problem of the lamp shows up even more clearly here. Hoping it doesn't rain tomorrow so I can go down and take some more different shots.
This is lovely, Hazel.

The crop makes it look much better but then I liked the original. I can only think that if you take a shot from the right of the gatepost, through the arch but maybe from a lower angle and see what that looks like? That red door has such appeal though

@mittens

Marilyn, thank you! I have a shot of this church in the snow one April (very unusual in England!) and it really is lovely with the red door against the white snow. It's our local village church.

@claireuk

I can try that too, thank you Claire! I'm not a church goer but a parishioner came along as I was taking the shot and told me that the red door has recently been repainted.

Prefer the original, as the cropping loses the framing of the trees either side. It is a very pretty church.

@princessm

Thanks for that - it's really good to get different feedback!

Oh no Hazel it looks like you will have to get down on your knees again for 365. As you know I cannot give any advice on your camera settings but I think the shot might be improved by lining up the arch of the light and the arch of the doorway by going to the right and lower.
I prefer the first shot with the framing of the trees

Well, I'm late to the conversation, but I like it cropped and with the door off-center. I have to say, tho, that you're making me happy I haven't joined the local camera club, as people have suggested. If I have to start working at it that hard... (Of course, I am still thinking about getting an actual camera to use instead of my phone. I guess that way madness lies.) But good for you! I'll cheer you on.

@quietpurplehaze not easy, i can't help thinking both the lantern arch and the doorway are both important elements in the picture, it would be interesting to see if the doorway section of the church could be framed by the lantern arch.

Very pretty. Love the red door. I read several of the comments and then checked out the other shot. I like the cropped version & I think I would try Floyd's approach too - it would make an interesting shot for sure.

Nice work.

I like them both -- the crop for the tight composition and the other for the perspective -- you show the church in its environment. It's definitely a subject worth pursuing.

composition looks fine to me, a bit of colour in the sky would enhance the overall image

@barbcapecod

If you want a camera to replace a phone for photography I don't think you would go far wrong with one from the Lumix series. I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ25, very portable, great shots, I love it - see some of my shots taken with it in my albums.
