On arrival at Inle Lake, we climbed into long boats and were whisked along a series of narrow waterways which emptied into a huge lake, teaming with hundreds of other vessels, to witness the Hpaung Daw Oo Pagoda water festival. This annual event features dozens of decorated barges, powered by teams of young men from the neighboring villages. The ceremonies and races pay homage to Buddha.
