My education continues…

Whenever I saw these orange-y flowers along the edge of the lakes I row, I thought they were “Tiger Lilies.” So I was surprised when my plant systematics expert identified a shot of those orange-y flowers as “Hemerocallis fulva,” or “Day Lily,” “Daylily,” “Tawny Daylily,” “Orange Daylily,” “Common Daylily” or “Ditch Lily” (!). I know we have a Daylily plant in front of our house, but the color scheme is completely different. It’s true I have learned that the same species of plant can “come with” different colors of flowers, but that never occurred to me for our Daylily and the “Tiger Lilies” at the lakes. Now that I see these and look at the flowers and buds in our front yard, they are structurally the same or similar!

Classification?
• PhytoImages, http://phytoimages.siu.edu/taxpage/0/0/79/binomial/Hemerocallis%20fulva.html and Dave’s Garden, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/201/ place “Hemerocallis fulva” in the Hemerocallidaceae family;

• Missouri Botanical Garden, http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=k430 places “Hemerocallis fulva” in the Xanthorrhoeaceae family;

• USDA, http://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=hefu and Invasive Plant Atlas of the United States, http://www.invasiveplantatlas.org/subject.html?sub=3407 place “Hemerocallis fulva” in the Liliaceae family.

C’mon, people, I’m tryin’ to learn this stuff!

Yes, by the way, this is considered invasive in some places!
