Is there a difference? by robz

Is there a difference?

One of these was saved on a white background. The other was placed onto and saved on a black background. Is there any actual difference in the image? Obviously there would be if one had transparencies incorporated, but, in the absence of this is there any difference? I was trying to see why so many images have the expression "best viewed on black" Is it purely a trick of the eye - the big background expanse of white or black affects how the eye perceives the image? Does this also explain why a different colour to the border can change the "feel" of a photo?
It is amazing the difference it makes sometimes. I think maybe it helps to draw the eye a different way or to a different part of the photo.

@dkbarnett I think you must be right there Delwyn - I felt that maybe even this small black border enhanced the colour of the pod casings.

I think black brings out subtle details that are lost in a white background. Not all photos need that boost, but it can make a difference in how my eye (at least) picks up on the image details and shadows. Your image is a good illustration of how black can make an image appear to have more depth than against a white background. Clever posting.

@taffy Thanks Taffy for adding your comments. Your mention of more depth made me look at the two images again - and I agree with your comment. Even that small dark border seems to make your eye have to go "through" that entry point - therefore giving an illusion of depth. Thank you for your thoughts - I do appreciate them.
