The little corner dam...

Looking quite different in 2 different b&w edits. It would be very helpful if you could give feedback if you have time. One was a post edit to change a normal image to b&w. The other was an in-camera "rich tone monochrome" setting. Many thanks. Cheers Rob
Not sure which is which, but I like the top one with a bit of sepia tones.

They both look good. I think I like the bottom one a little better, though.

Nice

Nice tones

I like the bottom one because the top one looks a bit busy.

They are both great. I have a preference for the top one but that maybe because of the perspective

Both have their strong points. The top one grabbed my attention first but the more I looked at them I think I prefer the bottom one!

I prefer the contrast in the top one, but I like both images.

Both nice images; I like the top one with its vintage feel

Both are great shots. Think I like the bottom one the best, just that it looks more like a b&w.

I prefer the bottom image, partly because I think it is a better composition. I find the foreground in the top image to be too bright and busy therefore quite distracting whereas in the bottom image the soft reflections complement the trees in the top half of the image creating a nicely balanced composition. I also find the tones more pleasing in the bottom image.

They are both fabulous but I prefer the bottom one. I tend to agree with Chris.

Wow! I agree with Chris.

I prefer the top one because I like the details better and the silvertone brings out the warmth

I like the top one. It has a nice vintage 19th century feel to it.

Both good but very different

Both turned out great. They would be gorgeous hanging on the wall.

I prefer the top just a wee bit more. It looks like an illustrated print from the late 1800’s.
Your flashback today is VERY SPECIAL!

They both look good. The top one reminds me of the old sepia toned poatcards. I prefer the lower one which seems to have a more contemporary feel.

Both good. My preference would be the lower one, lovely tonal range and shadows, just love the reflections fav btw

Both are good but I prefer the lower image. Fav 😊

Both are nice but I think I like the top one best

They are very different. I think I like the top one better because the details show up more to me.

oooh both nice shots
August 7th, 2024
I like the bottom one best

I think I like the bottom one better. I prefer the composition & the darker tones.

Interesting comparison. I like the reflections in the top one. It has kind of an infrared quality. I like the foreground but it seems a bit bright. The bottom one is nice as a more typical b&w which I tend to prefer. Both are well done!

I prefer the lower shot - better definition

Thanks to each of you for your feedback - and your choice for the bottom one seems to have been most popular. It was seen as a more modern image with better definition, tonal range and details. The top one was seen as more vintage and somewhat fussy. Your choice of the bottom one was the in-camera "rich tone monochrome" image. Lol - It seemed to prove that the camera is more effective at what it does than I am.. :) Thanks so much for your ideas - it was really helpful.

It was fascinating to read all of your comments - and really helped to identify the strengths and weaknesses in both images. In your choice for the top one most of you identified the slightly vintage feel with the tones and the extra detail which seemed to be able to be appreciated. That is really helpful to know because there had always been something about the in-camera version (the bottom one) that I didn't really like. I think it might be that lack of warmth or vintage feel. But I now know that I can add that afterwards if I want. Thanks again for your helpful ideas! Cheers Rob

Hi Chris. Thank you so much for suggestions. They gave me lots to think about - especially with being more discerning re the composition. Also, I realised after reading what you said that I had actually used a poor setting for the top one - the bottom one was the in-camera "rich tone monochrome" setting, the top one was mine. I still had the camera set to spot focusing and spot metering - hence the bright foreground. Worth remembering to give it more thought next time... Thanks so much again. Cheers Rob

@illinilass Thanks for your comment Dorothy. I'm afraid though that I might have to ask you about the "flashback" idea. :)

Tough choice. Both shots are interesting. However, I prefer the processing of the top shot. It has more interesting details and tones. I would slightly improve the composition by significantly darkening the foreground.

Both shots are good, but I like the toning in the top image. The bottom one looks a bit flat to me.
