Looking quite different in 2 different b&w edits. It would be very helpful if you could give feedback if you have time. One was a post edit to change a normal image to b&w. The other was an in-camera "rich tone monochrome" setting. Many thanks. Cheers Rob
I prefer the bottom image, partly because I think it is a better composition. I find the foreground in the top image to be too bright and busy therefore quite distracting whereas in the bottom image the soft reflections complement the trees in the top half of the image creating a nicely balanced composition. I also find the tones more pleasing in the bottom image.
Interesting comparison. I like the reflections in the top one. It has kind of an infrared quality. I like the foreground but it seems a bit bright. The bottom one is nice as a more typical b&w which I tend to prefer. Both are well done!
Thanks to each of you for your feedback - and your choice for the bottom one seems to have been most popular. It was seen as a more modern image with better definition, tonal range and details. The top one was seen as more vintage and somewhat fussy. Your choice of the bottom one was the in-camera "rich tone monochrome" image. Lol - It seemed to prove that the camera is more effective at what it does than I am.. :) Thanks so much for your ideas - it was really helpful. @mittens@busylady@carole_sandford@phil_howcroft@carolmw@ziggy77@fishers@ludwigsdiana@rickster549@bluemoon@onewing
It was fascinating to read all of your comments - and really helped to identify the strengths and weaknesses in both images. In your choice for the top one most of you identified the slightly vintage feel with the tones and the extra detail which seemed to be able to be appreciated. That is really helpful to know because there had always been something about the in-camera version (the bottom one) that I didn't really like. I think it might be that lack of warmth or vintage feel. But I now know that I can add that afterwards if I want. Thanks again for your helpful ideas! Cheers Rob @lynnz@craftymeg@illinilass@congaree@casablanca@amyk@shutterbug49@corinnec@marlboromaam
Hi Chris. Thank you so much for suggestions. They gave me lots to think about - especially with being more discerning re the composition. Also, I realised after reading what you said that I had actually used a poor setting for the top one - the bottom one was the in-camera "rich tone monochrome" setting, the top one was mine. I still had the camera set to spot focusing and spot metering - hence the bright foreground. Worth remembering to give it more thought next time... Thanks so much again. Cheers Rob @cdcook48
Tough choice. Both shots are interesting. However, I prefer the processing of the top shot. It has more interesting details and tones. I would slightly improve the composition by significantly darkening the foreground.
Your flashback today is VERY SPECIAL!
