I hate it when birds and animals get injured and this poor swan looked as though he had a broken wing. I saw him on Friday by Willington Lock when I walked along the cycle track. Another chap was also concerned and phoned the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Protection of Animals). He spent about 10 minutes on the phone trying to describe where the swan was to be found and kept telling them Willington, Bedfordshire with the country town of Bedford but the person on the other end of the phone kept saying Derbyshire. I know that there is a Willington in Derbyshire but he was clearly telling them Bedfordshire and it was so frustrating. Another chap said that he thought the swan had flown into the power lines and that is probably how he hurt himself. I do hope he has been helped. He sat on the river bank and didn't seem too perturbed by our presence but when someone came along with a dog he managed to get into the water and swam over to the other side of the river. I wondered whether he would survive if a fox came along and don't know whether a fox would have a go at him. I do hope not.
What a shame that the person on the other end of the phone just wasn't getting Bedfordshire............I do hope the swan survives as it is going to be a cold night
