This bird was soaring on the wind as I came home from my walk and it's not a very good pic as I had to crop it. I posted it to see if anyone can tell me what kind of bird it is. It is obviously some sort of bird of prey but I am sure someone on here can tell me what it is. I've got to go and get Steve's dinner so haven't had time to google it
Not sure where you live, but to me that fork tail looks like a red kite, I may be wrong. But I know there was a successful release programme, in the Oxford area, and they seem to be spreading all over.
I agree with Rhona that it's a red kite. Well spotted and quite clear enough. It's forked tail is it's most distinguishing feature. There were very few pairs left until their nests were guarded in mid Wales where there is also a red kite feeding station - just outside Rhaeadr. They have, over the last few years, spread and recently a friend saw one in north Wales, some 80 or more miles from the original breeding area.
@esox Thanks for the link Martin - it was really interesting. @mejbronant Thanks for help identifying this bird. I thought it might be a red kite but didn't dare get too excited in case it wasn't!
