Painted are pretty, small, colourful butterflies which travel around in very large numbers from Africa. In May/June naturalists have recorded thousands migrating over the Maltese islands (I have only seen this one in my garden – flirting from flower to flower). They migrate over large sea stretches from one landmass to another.
The Painted Lady breeds in every part of the world including Malta and migrates over the Maltese Islands whenever the exceptional sub-tropical winds blow over the Sahara into the Central Mediterranean.
