Popularly known as the Main Guard, this building – situated on Piazza San Giorgio in front of the President’s Palace (previously the Governor’s Palace and before that the Grand Master’s Palace) knows its beginning to the Knights of St John as the Guardia della Piazza. It housed the palace guards. During British rule its role did not change but the place was shared with the officers’ mess of the King’s Own Malta Regiment. At the end of the British rule it served as a Lybian and Italian cultural centre. Since a good number of years it now serves as an annex of the Attorney General’s Office
