The village of Nadur originally formed part of the Matrice Church of Gozo (today Gozo Cathedral). In 1688 it was established as a parish for the east of Gozo and the first parish priest was specifically detailed to build a parish church on public land on the "Ta' Nadur" hill, donated for such purpose by Fra Gregorio Carafa (1680-1690), a Grand Master of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Until the new church was built, parish activity was carried out from a small rural church on the outskirts of Qala. The new temple, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul was begun in 1760 on the design of the Maltese architect Giuseppe Bonnici. In 1907 important additions were made to the structure on the Italian Renaissance by architect F.S. Sciortino and the ceiling depicting episodes connected to the two patron saints was painted by the Maltese painter Lazzaro Pisani.
