It was a big surprise for me seeing this hearse in front of our local parish church. There is a funeral service almost every day in San Gwann but I haven’t seen a horse drawn one for many many years. Chatting with friends, someone said that the dead guy loved horses and I came to the conclusion that it was he who asked to be buried in this way.
The hearse brought back memories of my childhood days when I was an altar boy and we used to assist the priest in conducting the last rights when somebody died. The dead person used to be carried by a hearse just like this but pulled by four horses. The priest and the altar boy followed in a carriage pulled by two horses. A burial used to take up at least half a day and a big part of the time was for the hearse to arrive at the cemetry. With every street clogged with the heavy morning traffic I wouldn’t want to guess how long it takes nowadays.
Thank you so much for all your visits, for your comments and for the fav's on yesterday's picture.
I always said this is what I want when I die because I am very allergic to horses and can't go near them while I am alive! I love the elegance of these carriages.
