When we moved to this house in 1993 we couldn't have guessed how much the little weeping beech tree would grow, or how beautiful it would be particularly in spring and autumn. But eight or nine years ago we had a severe storm in late spring /early summer and a split developed at the V in the trunk, and continued to extend downwards. I've known for years it would have to come down and felt very sad at the thought.
So today was the day.....originally I was planning to be up at Mum's but had a bad cold, etc so stayed at home. So glad I was able to watch the two very skilful guys doing their job, and I didn't feel so bad.
There's a self seeded baby tree in the circle so we'll see how it grows and also another tall one further down the garden which we couldn't see properly as it was behind the one that came down today.
And we do have much more light in the family room so that's rather nice.
I've shared photos of the tree so often and it's great to have a lovely record of it!
Three good things
1. Lovely guys doing a great job.
2. Cosy inside....more snow fell last night.
3. Feeling better after a gentle day.

Thank you for your lovely comments....Nice that it made a lovely impression on so many people in its time. I'm sure our family will say
'Remember the tree that was in the circle.....'
Great collage and story about you tree. We're going to have a huge pin oak taken out of our yard soon. I am going to miss it but we're worried that it might fall over and cause damage.

Marilyn I know how you feel - we were just in that position. But somehow watching the experts taking it apart with care made it feel not so bad, and it will be interesting to see how much we can make the most of the space!
Pat the first one I took photos of every week is not far away from this. Still very much standing.....too tall really....and it grows on the drive beside our house so not actually ours to deal with but we are going to contact the centre that owns it and recommend the tree surgeons!! In summer it really blocks the evening sun...along with some others growing beside the little stream at the edge of the garden.
I know the 'B Team' will always remember the big tree in the circle!
It's always so hard to make a decision about a tree like that. I'm dreading the day when we'll have to take one or more of our trees down. It's nice though that you have a whole history of this tree in pictures. Good collage!
I've been in this position too. So sad to see a beautiful tree go, but really apprieciate the new light and perspective in the garden. I have just been watching the wonderful programme made by Judi Dench on the life of trees. An eye opener.
