It seems a long time since we first saw the first blackthorn blossom, which most people in the country see as one of the first signs of spring. In previous years the blackthorn has all flowered over two to three weeks, by the end of which the hedgerows are a mass of frothy clouds. This year some of the blackthorn shrubs are already past their best, while others have blossom that has not long opened.
