Frosty mornings have meant mud-free pooches. I decided to follow a notoriously muddy riverside route, confident that the mud would be frozen. It was so waterlogged that although the surface was frozen, both dog paws and my boots broke through the frozen crust into the mud beneath. The flooded path was a sheet of ice, solid but treacherous.
