After all the recent images of cultivated grasses, which after all is what wheat is, it’s time to return my attention to its natural roots, the wild grasses that thrive in all the corners, gateways and wherever man doesn’t interfere. Wheat may grow tall, straight, dense and productive, but without the cultivation, sprayed herbicides and fertilizer, and general “tender loving care”, it wouldn’t look a lot different to these wild versions. In fact I suspect that the hardy wild grasses would be healthier. These grasses are much more photogenic, but cultivated wheat certainly has its uses (as I bite into my toasted granary bread, butter and marmalade...)
