Took the dogs out this evening onto the fields at the back of the house. The 5 metre band of set aside wildlife corridor around the edge of the field was full of dead seed heads, but amongst them I found one cow parsley still in flower. This fly had spotted it too!
@kbird61 Not really, other than use a tripod when you can. This was handheld though as with 2 dogs in tow and a large bag of blackberries just picked plus the camera, phone and house keys, I couldn't face lugging the tripod too! One tip is to put the lens onto manual focus so that you don't lose the subject when it moves and the camera automatically focuses elsewhere. Try to focus on the eyes. Someone advised me to use a monopod if a tripod wasn't convenient, but I haven't tried that yet. Another way of focusing is to put lens on manual focus. Focus on subject as close as you can get, then move slightly away and toward the subject to get into focus instead of keeping camera in one place and turning the focusing ring. Another thing is to put the camera on multiple shots so you can take several at a time. Useful as insects move about. You might just get the shot you're trying to get!
Hope that helps.
@cazann yes he sure was. He was watching me take his picture. He didn't want to look straight on at the camera but kept turning to one side so I would move round and he would move back again. Very eery!
Hope that helps.
