It was their wedding day and the Heavens opened as they came out of the church.
Another friend had brought her white umbrella that she had for her wedding some years ago. She said she had lent it to several Brides over the years and it was not needed as it rained before and after the wedding photos. She said it would bring good luck and keep the rain away. Sadly it's magic didn't work this time, but it was nice for the Bride to have the use of the pretty white umbrella!
I personally needed a stiff drink. I wasn't aware that I was to be designated wedding photographer until the day before, despite my protests of 'I don't do weddings' 'I don't know how to use my flash so can't do indoor photos' etc, etc....
They didn't listen, they said they'd have what I took but could I do a few group shots of the relatives? No pressure then! OK, can't be that difficult can it?
Oh yes it can! We walked out of the church to a great big black cloud over us and before I could group anyone it poured and poured. I tried to persuade people to come outside under the umbrellas I had arranged to bring (just in case). No one would co-operate.
Never mind, I did my best. I'm not a professional and don't pretend to be.
So, here's a photo of the happy couple running down the path to the wedding car, complete with raindrops on my lens that I was unaware of.
Fab shot and I can sympathize with them. When Donna and I got wed in July, 1987 as we said "I do", there was a huge and ominous crack of thunder and the rain heaved down in great gouts. I thought it was a bad omen but we are still together after all this time. Hang on...! It WAS a bad omen after all! :o))
@steampowered 26 years, more than a life sentence! You'd be out by now..... seriously though, that's quite impressive. Well done to both of you.
How did your photographer get his shots in the rain?
It was freezing cold, very overcast and blowing a gale the day we got married and then the next day the temperature was back up in the 20's and it was a perfect blue day.
I should elaborate, I once got roped into being the wedding photographer when I didn't even know my f-stop from my arsehole... And it wasn't even my camera.
@nicolecampbell so unfair! I got married in January the first time round and had goose bumps and shivered with the cold and drizzle. 33 years later I married @shepherdman/365 but had more sense and chose the middle of May!
@bobfoto Was that the catalyst to take up photography? Could have gone the other way and put you off, but I know it didn't as you take fantastic photos.
@shepherdmanswife - I was kinda liking my own photos at the time (film of course) but someone asked me to use their flash as part of the job... BAH! Lucky we're still friends!
@bobfoto that makes me feel a little better as I did get some very nice photos for them, just not the usual posed shots, more like people running with brollies in the rain!
Congrats on your new and stressful position as wedding photographer! I'm with you in not wanting to do weddings anymore but it looks like you got it done well... and in the rain to make it even more difficult!
I like them both for different reasons. I love how he has his arm around her protectively - so sweet. I like the other for whimsical reasons - would be fun to frame.
Not sure how I would feel about someone telling me I was their wedding photographer - LOL. Pressure on you not to be able to just relax and enjoy, either.
A but unfair to you, telling you at the last moment that you were their wedding photographer--but I'm sure you did your best. If this shot is any indication, you took some good ones. Even the drops on the lens provide a special memory of this special day. I love this picture, fav for me!
I'm a new follower and I feel your pain! 2.5 years ago my best friend called and said she wanted me to "just take snapshots" at her daughter's wedding. Those "snapshots" ended up as a full-on photo shoot, as I was the only photographer. I muddled through and decided then and there to stick to landscapes and life moments. I am not an event photographer! Whew!
Sweet shot ! When my son got married last December, the official photographer had ot leave as she was sick....guess who got roped in to take the photos ! Luckily my sister is also a keen photographer so between us we managed a few decent shot, thankfully ! Nerve wracking though.....
What a stressful situation! If this shot is an example of your captures, I think they can feel very lucky that you were willing to share your talent and know how to capture their special day. Very sweet shot. I love the capture of the rain, too.
Oh goodness poor you, I shy away from anything like that, just because I like taking photographs does not make me a photographer!! and you had such awful conditions to contend with, though I'm sure you did very well. I like this shot because of the way he has his arm around her, great catch.
Oh I am so sorry you had to deal with that situation. I would have died! I like this one. The raindrops are a special addition. I'll bet they were happy to have any and all of your shots!
