I love these guys. Hopefully they will continue to spread back across the UK with all the conservation work that is going on. These squirrels are our native squirrel that have become extinct in most areas of England due to the imported Grey Squirrel that give them a disease they can't survive. Such a shame.
Having said that, I do like the Grey Squirrels too, but not at the expense of the Red.
I am sure they lived in the village where I grew up or perhaps that's a "wish" memory.

A red squirrel as opposed to the the grey! So much more colour. This is superb with the eye and the light caught within, perfect! It must be Squirrel Nutkin! fav
We don't have any red squirrels in Cornwall any more, but the grey ones are just as delightful (but not as you say at the expense of the red)....we have one who lives in our garden and he is at present busy stripping all the hazel nuts off of our garden tree........my cats try to chase him but he is way too quick for them.....
