Dh and I took the ferry over to Cape May this weekend. We've lived here for 11 years, and this is the first time we've done this. Not sure why we chose DECEMBER to do an adventure like that, but we did it nonetheless. And it was a lot of fun! Mostly ... there WAS that little bit of seasickness ... ugh! Anyway, apparently the ferry really churns up the fish, and these guys seemed to be well aware of that fact!
So my get-pushed challenge this week from Debbie @deborah63 is to do a Dutch Angle shot. From what I read, the purpose of the angle is to help build tension in the photo. I got a kick out of this guy up front here and thought this shot might work well!
Nice capture Ashley. You certainly got the angle working well and I love the Focus on the guy up front. But I feel that because of the DOF the rest of the birds are bit soft and it's not really apparent that the birds are diving into the water and the water looks quite calm, so I'm not really sure that that this type of shot works really well on this shot.
When I attempted this last week it was explained to me that this technique is used a lot in cinematography to show tension, disorientation, or uneasiness. Maybe try this in a crowd, a traffic jam, rush hour, looking up at tall buildings, a person going crazy, a storm maybe,
I'm reading Debbie's comments with fascination and see a whole world of possibilities there. Since I love this particular shot, I'm thinking that I might be quite tense if a bird like that had his eye on me.
Ashley, did you miss page 2 of the six word story 42 entries? Ensure me that you considered the entries on page 2 because there were several excellent stories on that page. I just want to make sure you saw them since all your choices were from the first and last page. Http://www.365project.org/tags/sixws-42
@kathyboyles Kathy, yes I saw all three pages. You're right, there were a LOT of EXCELLENT stories! I started with about 15 of them, all tabbed across the top of my web page, and narrowed down from there. Once I had my choices lined up, I didn't pay attention to the pages. It was tough choosing this time, that's for sure!
Ashley I am so sorry for being so late to answer to your challenge. I returned from a short trip yesterday and I was so tired that I barely managed to unpack my things before going to sleep. I am really sorry!
I wonder if you would like to try a photo with a very obvious "mistake" in a way that makes it work. For example, a very over-exposed photo with regions of the picture burned out. Or an angle that distorts the main subject, completely unnatural white balance, etc.
I saw recently a web page with using some of these mistakes on purpose; sadly I didn't bookmark it and I can't find it again. If you don't like the idea, please let me know, I will do my best to come up with a different challenge!
@shesnapped Merry Christmas back to you and yours! I've been wracking my brain for a challenge that will suit what has got to be a busy season for you (I love my challenge, btw, though it's a bit daunting.) So I thought that perhaps you could do a photo that epitomizes/displays one of the many crazy hustle-bustle aspects of the season, those aspects of Christmas that make people feel overwhelmed.

What an interesting idea - I'll definitely ponder that one and see what I come up with!
