I took my youngest granddaughter to see the new animated movie, "The Star". Then my wife and I went to a local high school planetarium to watch, "The Mystery of the Christmas Star". This machine is called a, star ball. It projects the stars and planets on a concave ceiling as viewers recline in seats around the planetarium. βThe Mystery of the Christmas Star,β takes a look at what astronomical event might have created the biblical account of the bright star showing the wise men where Jesus was born. Among the possibilities explored are; a nova, a supernova or the conjunction of multiple planets.
@taffy - The first one of these I saw was when I was in grade school and our class took a trip to Pittsburgh and the Buhl Planetarium.Theirs was much larger, We were led into the planetarium and they lowered the lights when the star ball was raised through the floor. It kind of scared me as I thought it was a rather large ant.
Oh what fun indeed! I remember my first visit as a child to the London Planetarium and feeling awed by the stars and the shape of the building inside. Sounds a great performance.
