How many times have you been out in public and notice a group of people (2 or more) and one of them, or more, was giving all their attention to their cell phone phone?
I edited this to hide the identities and give it a Norman Rockwellish feel or statement of what I see as the effect cell phones are playing on our decreasing communication skills. Yes, I admit that I get caught up in it too!
I had a grandmother who when she came to visit after a couple of days she got anxious to go home because she was afraid she was missing out on something. When she got home she wanted to be back with us. I think cellphones evoke in too many people that fear they are missing something. And the are - they are missing out on the companionship of the person they are with.
I've been to so many events where there's people just "documenting" with their phone rather than watching it or taking part. Which means they're not really experiencing it while it's happening, and they probably wont get the best footage to "experience" it from afterwards..
@miseria - I remember the first time my wife and I saw what was about to become this way of life for many people. We were in a restaurant when my wife, a people watcher, called my attention to a young couple seated across the restaurant from us. They were together seated in a booth opposite each other and each were staring at their phones. They were too far away to hear their conversation to know what caused them to be looking at their phones but it seemed as though whatever was on their phones was of more interest than each other.
I think it is a really sad thing that has happened. Our telephone when I was a child was made of Bakelite and was plugged in in the hallway of our house and you had to put your finger in the dial and turn to call a number. None of this modern in your pocket 24/7 thing. I am glad I didn't have it as a child. My husband got 2 people who were arguing over the email in his office at adjacent desks to go and have a cup of coffee and talk instead....... they felt really awkward about it because they weren't sure how to say it with real words! Tragic.
This is something I see everywhere! I really dislike it when my friends have to check their phones all the time. Really??!! Love the processing on this very timely photo. Fav.
@365karly1 - You also see those people in grocery stores pushing their carts around the store while talking on the phone. I admit that there have been times that I have called to make sure that I am getting the right item but you can tell those who are talking about something other than what to get. Especially those who think they have to talk loud so the other person can hear them!
@casablanca - A friend of mine sent me an email or maybe a meme on Facebook about emojis. It was something to the effect of archeologists in the future finding emojis and trying to decipher their meaning in communication. Much like hieroglyphics
