"Mappa Mundi means 'cloth of the world' in latin. Measuring 1.59 metres by 1.34 metres, Hereford's mappa mundi is the largest complete cloth, or map, of the world that is known to have survived from the Middle Ages. The map is constructed on a single sheet of vellum (calf skin). Scholars believe it was made around 1300 and shows the history, geography and destiny of humanity as it was understood in Christian Europe in the late 13th and early 14th centuries". It's quite incredible to be standing in front of a map which is over 700 years old!! There was a chap there, a volunteer, who was very knowledgeable and explained the meaning of it all to us. Pamela and I came away with our brains throbbing.
Photography is not allowed in the exhibition but I bought a book and scanned the photo in the front of the book.
