Happy New Year @dmdfday Long story Diane! I don't have a hour glass so I used I wine glass, duplicated & flipped it. Then used the perspective tool on the 2017 (that took some doing) and the smudge tool. Pencilled in a blurred line and then erased some of the layer to show the black sand. It took me about 2 hours!!! I'm sure there are easier and quicker ways but I'm pretty new to editing. Lots of it could be neater, but I figured I had spent enough time on it. I work in Gimp 2.8.
