This statue was erected just outside Penzance, to honour the many Cornish fishermen who had perished at sea in recent times.
We always refer to it as the Subbuteo fisherman..... which probably means nothing to most of you.....
But back in the early 1970s, before the invention of the home computer or the games console, many of us passed our time playing a game called Subbuteo table football. This involved flicking tiny little footballers around a large green baize football pitch. These little figures had a weighted base which looked exactly like the one that this chap is standing on which kept them upright.
The game was a sensation and anybody who was interested in football (That's Soccer to you US peeps) spent much of their youth involved in Subbuteo leagues and cup competitions. There was even a world cup competition with big money prizes. I believe it still has a diehard fan base to this very day.
I have never worked out why the artist gave this chap a subbuteo base.
Very cool statue in tribute to those who died at sea... and super interesting info, I had no knowledge about subbuteo! It's nice you tagged it, I clicked and three other photos were there and showed me the actual game :)
