Before we moved to Cornwall 24 years ago, We used to live in Aylesbury. We are currently staying there for a few days, to visit friends and family.
I have no idea who this statue was meant to commemorate, but when we lived here, there was a chap who used to spend most of days sitting at the foot of the statue drinking his 4 pack of Sainsbury's larger, and he had a passing resemblance to the statue. His name was Ken Grimshaw, and this statue was always affectionately known as the Ken Grimshaw monument. He was actually quite an interesting chap if you took the time to sit and chat with him.
Ken wasn't there today when we visited, I assume he has passed away, as he wasn't young 24 years ago, Just as well there is a statue still there to remember him by. ð
It is John Hampden, MP for Buckinghamshire who was a radical opponent of Charles 1..in the late 1500's to 1650, died in a Civil War batlle I think. His manor was at Great Hampden, not far from Aylesbury.
Lovely narrative.
