Continuing to post favorite images from the Chicago annual "Open House" photo walks I did on Saturday and Sunday. I'm posting two views of the Chicago River today -- this one from the bridge that is at Lake Shore Drive, the furthest east bridge over the river (because to the east of this one is Lake Michigan). I liked this scene because the river was so quiet except for the lone sightseeing boat. The other image was taken on the Van Buren Street bridge looking north, in the West Loop area: http://365project.org/taffy/special-photos/2013-10-22
And a totally silly entry for the mundane abstract teabag, a shot actually taken and posted for today: http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2013-10-22
Instant FAV! Love the reflections on the buildings, the clouds in the sky, the boat, the river going down and around the bend. Brilliant cityscape, river composition, Taffy!
Super great shots of beautiful Chicago.
(Taffy, I think you should rename one of your albums and devote it to the shots of your city. You can edit the shots you posted before and trasfer them to the restyled album - it takes a little time but I think it would be worth it)
YOUR CHICAGO SHOTS ARE JUST GREAT!
It would be interesting to see them all together, with different sky / light conditions, different seasons, different buildings or different takes of the same buildings, etc.
OR: what about a publication???? Architeture Foundation might be interested? The photos of their brochures are really horrible...
@elaine55 This one took a lot of processing as I was learning a few new things. Step 1: HDR using HDR Efex in Nik Suite, since the lighting was really variable so I wanted to combine the three images. Step 2: Color efex filters to take away the HDR weirdness. Step 3: PT Lens to correct the lens distortion from the wide angle shot, but in doing that it made it really grainy, so Step 4: Back to Color Efex to re-do the filter I'd done earlier. Step 5: Give up, save, post! I usually don't spend that much time on a shot but I really liked this one and knew that I wanted it to look like what I saw with naked eye.
@yaorenliu The river cuts right through the city and has a north and south branch, so it's very much a part of Chicago. What is interesting is that it used to be polluted and awful and most buildings had no view of it -- sort of 'turned their back to the river' but a few decades ago, there was a big initiative to clean up the river and it's changed the whole look of the city. There is a museum about the river in one of the bridge houses where they have the controls to raise and lower the bridges to let taller ships in and out and it's fascinating.
I like how you processed this, your PoV and the boat Taffy! Does the river lined with the buildings cause a tunnel effect making Chicago the Windy City?
@maggiemae Thanks for telling me, Maggiemae!! It was exciting to see it for the few minutes it was on PP (it's already off :-( but I'm glad it made it for a little bit and if you hadn't told me I wouldn't have known.
Super awesome job! Was going to ask if this was one of your 3 shot HDRs then saw the explanation earlier. Very surreal effect, but I especially like how it brought out all the tones of blues reflected in the buildings.
@archaeofrog Hi Katie -- yes, it was one of the hand held three bracket shots -- not many of them worked because of hand shake, but the few that did look so much clearer than any single shot. Glad you liked it!
Wow, this is dramatic and beautiful but I feel like you do even better now with such scenes. I noted that the XXXXX building doesn't show its letters, or you removed them! I so love Flashback Friday!
