The rule of thirds suggests that this should have been lined up differently, with the horizon higher or lower in the frame. But the weekly theme this week, break the rules, made me rethink, placing the horizon in the middle instead. Lake Michigan was glass and the sky was filled with clouds. This was the result. Price to be paid: two mosquito bites, two mosquitoes that got into the house to terrorize us (happily now smashed).
Title designed as six word story...
Rule of thirds is an oversimplification, and should be considered as a composition tool rather than a rule. Since there is cool mirroring going on, the centered horizon line makes sense to me. The main focal point is the sun and its reflection and the area between them = vertical line. That line is a bit off-center, creating a lot of tension vs. the perfectly centered horizon line. I feel like that is the actual rule-breaking in this shot :)
Aah another challenge I need to check out! Am so way behind on the challenges this week!
The horizon works in this image because of the lovely mirror reflections. Terrific sunset and colours.
Love this brooding image Taffy. Learning today. Now I know what the rule of thirds is about., felt silly to ask when it has been mentioned in the past! Felt it was something I should have known. Not afraid to ask now as it's the only way I'll learn.
There certainly are instances where the rule of thirds can and should be broken...a picture of reflections is one of those instances. The reflections may have been even more dramatic with a long exposure...but then the mozzy bites may have been more as well!! :)
Beautiful shot! Great choice putting the horizon in the middle.....it would have been a shame to have lost any of the sky or its reflections in the water. Fav.
Rules are made to be broken! beautiful colour, a lovely sunset.
Nit sure if I mentioned this to you last year when you were at Beaver Island. Dab some lavender on your ankles legs and wrists to keep the mozzies away.
Wow, great sunset, and yes, rules were made to be broken! The composition is so perfectly split in half, and sacrificing either sky or water in the name of the "rules" would have ruined it! And, thanks for reminding me of six word story #11....I hadn't realized it had started!
