A special treat last night - kayaking on Barney's lake with a friend who has a 2 seater. She's gone so often that she did most (well, all) of the paddling so I could photograph. We saw (often from a distance, but still very cool): a deer, a beaver, a muskrat, too many dragon- and damselflies to count, the loon family, common birds (e.g., goose, duck), and for a real treat, almost no mosquitoes! I'd never seen this kind of damselfly before -- bright yellow, or as we were coming in, a light white one. Will be posting from this adventure for the next few days.
Thanks for enjoying my 'just for fun' shots the past two days.
@wag864 It was handheld. I was using the side of the kayak as a steadying support to take a shot and was in the right place at the right time and clicked to catch this one in the air.
Wonderful capture Taffy!! Finally got my internet back working so trying to catch up - once again!! Fav for this beauty!! Sounds like a great way to get to see the wildlife close up!!
Question : Have you done the cruise from Vancouver to Alaska? I am looking into doing it - we have a new programme on BBC - Alaska Live - and the sight of all the bears and eagles catching the salmon is fantastic!! One of my bucket list places to visit!!
@pamknowler Hi Pam -- good to see you! I've done the cruise from Alaska to Vancouver, in that direction, with stops in Juneau, Seward, Ketchikan, etc. It was beautiful!! But, on a large ship (we were on Princess), you won't see salmon or bears. Those tend to be viewable with special arrangements and at certain times of year. I would think a smaller ship might make a difference and also the available 'shore time' and arrangements you can make. That's not to say it wasn't an amazing trip, but that wildlife is very much a matter of timing and where you are relative to the sea, rivers, and land. I think you night be able to connect it to a land trip into Denali and make the wildlife photo trip a part of the land segment. Definitely an exciting place to go and one of amazing beauty.
That is a wonderful in flight capture with all four wings being displayed beautifully. I love the yellow dragonfly and you even got the reflection too. Sounds like a great trip with all those sightings. Look forward to seeing more.
@taffy Thanks Taffy I am doing lots of research and reading reviews. The large cruise ships are not what I am looking for I think. Maybe it's not a cruise I want but a trip to see the bears feeding and then to go out whale watching. Not much point in going if I don't see the wildlife!! Mind you going on my trips to Canada I have yet to see any decent wildlife!! No bears in BC - no moose in Newfoundland!! LOL!!
@pamknowler The trip you just described seems much more interesting than the cruise. I met someone on a photography trip who did that kind of course once, specifically on photographing bears. Her pictures were quite spectacular! And another friend went on a wilderness type of trip where they camped and had bears walking by them. That would be quite a bit too close for comfort for me. But equally amazing sounding.
Juat when I think you can't possibly impressive me more than you have with your photo skills, I see this shot. The level of detail, clarity, and motion here is beyond awesome!!
Bless that friend to give you time to shoot these beauties. Wonderful way to sneak up on them in a kayak. Never seen a yellow dragonfly before - he's a beauty.
