The Beaver Island deer's coats have begun to turn gray for the winter. They are also visible wherever we go, from the sides of roads (and too often, running across the road) to the golf course. I hope they learn to hide as hunting season will start at the end of October. A necessity on the island, but still sad for the deer.
Taken with my iPhone, which was all I had with me.
We have a big problem with deer on our island. Every morning there are at least 10 deer in our yard, sometimes more. There is not enough food for the deer, so they are very unhealthy looking. Nice fly by Iphone shot.
They are lovely - and I assume they are native to the island. It must be hard to hear the sound of guns and know what's happening, even when you know it's the best thing in the long run.....
@maggiemae They are hunted here, as well. But, only for a short time in the fall. It's partly to control the population so areas aren't overrun with deer because that will deplete there food source. And, besides being beautiful animals, they are also quite tasty.
Beautiful scene Taffy!! Wish you were here with us in Derbyshire!! Louise and Ken are loving Derbyshire. We went to Chatsworth House on Sunday and going again tomorrow - Casablanca is driving over to join us and meet us all for the first time. It's pouring with rain today but sunshine forecast for tomorrow - fingers crossed!! We are having big problems with WiFi and so taking this opportunity to say hello to you!!xx
Great phone shot! Deer are everywhere up on Orcas Island too and the locals complain that they eat their vegetable gardens. Hunting isnât allowed however.
I have enjoyed watching deer almost daily on our land. Hunting season started today. My son is an avid hunter and fisherman. This Mom quietly struggles with it. He does eat what he kills, not just for sport. But the first movie I bought when I found out I was pregnant was "Bambi" ... guess it had the opposite effect. Though he does avoid the does with young ones. Like how the grass adds a screen between you and them.
