We had intended to fill up at Heartbreak Hotel but this is what greeted us when we went to the bowser. Buggar!!!!
The next place to get fuel was our destination for the night at Barkly Homestead, 380kms south down the Tablelands Hwy. Our trip computer said we had 388kms of fuel remaining so it shouldn't be a problem right?.
The only other alternative was to continue east along the Carpentaria Hwy and do a round trip of 250km to get fuel at Boroloola before continuing south to Barkly.
If we headed straight for Barkly and nursed the car along we would probably get a few more kms out of it but if we struck headwinds we would get less. And being a diesel, if we did run out, it is not a simple matter of putting more fuel in the tank. You have to perform all sorts of blessings and incantations over it before it can be restarted. Way beyond my pay grade.
So in the end, we took the cowards way out and made a hurried trip to Boroloola. Kramer would have been very disappointed with us.
@terryliv ha ha, very understandable, we have been faced with a similar predicament on a previous trip and had an unexpected overnight at a remote place.
