In Taringa, an upmarket suburb a short distance towards the city from our place, there is a large colony of Flying Foxes.
Bats are the only mammal capable of sustained flight and as the largest of the bats, Flying Foxes are the largest flying mammal in the world. They can weigh up to a kilo and have a wingspan of more than a metre.
The structure of the Flying Foxes wings are clearly evident here with claws emanating from the first and second fingers. These claws are used to manoeuvre itself around the branches of trees in which it feeds and roosts.
Awesome capture Terry! I thought bats flew at night. NI don't think I've ever seen one in the daytime. Not sure that I've ever seen one at all. I have seen flying squirrels although they don't really flying they just kind of glide from tree to tree.
Great shot, love the detail on his wings. I love bats, but my only complaint is when the poop on my car, it sets like concrete and is a bugger to get rid of ha ha.
Get out! A bat! You have the most amazing animal and bird shot opportunities. And you make such good use of them too. Fantastic capture of this flying rodent (as my youngest calls them). Intrigued by the details in his "wings".
