I don't know how popular/common these are in other places but if you have not seen them before, they are Caladiums.
Caladiums originated from tropical South America and over 1,000 varieties have been developed from the original form of the plant. They grow from tubers and die down in winter.
These leaves started appearing about a month ago.
The reason I hate scrub turkeys so much is we used to have a heap of mature plants, reds, whites, red and white and fancy. The leaves of the reds and the whites grew to over 50cm x 50cm. One summer, a few years ago, we were away for a couple of weeks and the scrub turkeys got into the garden and dug them up and ate the tubers. We managed to salvage some of them but it is taking time to get them back to size. We have no white ones left.
Great colourful image Terry lovely textures, patterns and focus, saw my first Scrub Turkey in the Daintree area, was ambling around a creek I was swimming in to cool off, took a photograph and asked at the hotel about them seem they are very common, lol;)
The color patterns in these are really pretty. Your loathing of the scrub turkey is all the more understandable after seeing these plants and hearing that you lost so many of them. I see so many other types of plants too — what a beautiful garden you have.
