Welcome to Birdsville by terryliv

Welcome to Birdsville

Absolutely love this sign.
As stated, the population of Birdsville is 115 give or take. So why the +/- 7000? People from Oz get 5 seconds to think about it.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Got it?

Every year, the Birdsville races are held and people from all over Australia, and probably a few from overseas flock to the town for a week of partying, drinking catching up with far away neighbours and, oh yes, some horse races.

So just think for a moment the logistics of a town of 115 suddenly supporting 7000 visitors. Apparently with the cooperation and good humour of all, it manages quite well. The races were on the week end after we were there.

What a phenomenon! People must bring their gear to camp because I can't imagine there are enough rooms to rent.

@cejaanderson There is no accommodation for visitors Jane. There are a handful of rooms at the pub but these are reserved for the workers. Everyone camps, either in caravans, tents or just swags. People who fly in set up their swags under the wings of their plane.

Great sign. How long does it take to get served at the pub when the races are on?

That's quite the influx in population on occasion.
