Part of our history)

This statue stands at Cooktown - the departure point of miners who were flooding into the Palmer River area during the Gold Rushes of the 1870's. These men walked, with their swag, their tools and their supplies, along the river beds to get to the gold fields. In May 1877their were 19,500 miners on the field. It was incredibly tough going but for many it was very lucrative. During the 4 years of the main workings over 19 tons of high quality gold was taken out of the area. And this did not include the gold sent back to China by chinese diggers via the chinese store-keepers.
Our Australian culture and personality has developed from many different historical ways of life and from the qualities required to survive in our harsh conditions.
Posted by @robz for the theme "monochrome" - assuming that white and black don't count!! :)
Great statue and composition!

Lovely silhouette. That history is somewhat like our own here in California. Our county is named for the mining (Placer county). We live only a few miles from Coloma which is where the gold that started the California Gold Rush was discovered.
