The brass sculpture of a horse, by the artist Marjan Wouda, was commissioned by Walsall Council in the 1990s and celebrates Walsall's industrial heritage. Walsall was, and still is, known for its leather industry, particularly saddlery but also “…fancy leather goods, bags, cases, waist belts, leggings, leather scout and girl guide equipment, and footballs”. Walsall Football Club’s nickname is The Saddlers.
