We used to have a big pond with koi and other carp etc, but after years of battling leaks and herons we donated them to a local garden centre and created a wildlife pond instead. We kept two goldfish, but thought they had died over the winter. It looks like one of them did, but not this one - yay!
So pleased you have a survivor ! I also had koi , goldfish and golden orf in our pond - till the Heron found and easy fishing spot , ! Only had a few goldfish for years they got eaten , last year replenish the pond with 10 new goldfish ! The heron visited again - now only 3 little gold fish ! - not at all amused !!!!!!!!!!!
@ludwigsdiana We tried that but the herons still try, and they just end up stabbing the fish. They are all having a lovely time now in a massive pond not far away.
@ludwigsdiana We did put a net over the pond at one time but as the pons is of an irregular shape - it didn't look very aesthetic , and the heron still came and we found dead fish ! -
When I read your title, Lesley, I thought you were referring to the guinea pig :))) Then I read your whole description. Three cheers for the lone surviving goldfish! That's a pretty pond, too!
It's certainly a nice view for you, but you can't win a fight with a hungry heron. The only thing you can do is take an interesting photo of the heron.
We have a pond but now no fish....the heron still comes to take to frogs! I have a horrible video from a wildlife camera that captured the moment one poor frog was taken ugh.....apparently herons walk towards a pond. A solution is to put a decorative barrier/fence around a little way off from the pond to stop them. I might do that to mine eventually.
